A few years ago, one of the most impressive and special events took place at this time of the year. An unlikely duo became best friends when neighbors and strangers showed the world that they care for each other.
31-year-old Chris Salvatore moved to a town where he didn’t know anyone. Sociable and gregarious, he introduced himself to the older woman who lived next door. Norma Cook was 89 years old and lived alone with her cat, Hermes. In the end, the young man invites the older woman to live with him because he needs constant care.
“She couldn’t be happier that I asked. I was over there visiting most days anyway. The only other option was for her to go into a facility. I just couldn’t do that to someone who is like my own grandmother.”
Then a few more years have passed, and when Norma was 89, her health worsened and Chris stepped in to offer his assistance and care.
Suffering from multiple health complications, as well as leukemia meant her medical expenses were starting to pile up as well. Because of that, Christ set up a GoFundMe for Norma and the donations started pouring in.
It’s What a Good Neighbor Would Do
The two of them would spend most of the time together, hanging out with each other. Whether it was to share a pizza or a glass of champagne, they became best friends and family in no time.
Unfortunately, Norma passed away approximately four years after meeting her young best friend. Yet, it was his love and kindness that gave Norma a peaceful farewell.
“She taught me to love so much deeper than I ever could imagine possible. Norma opened the hearts of so many people during a time when it was desperately needed.
She was a truly powerful woman who had the ability to bring people together who may not have crossed paths otherwise.”
When Norma died, Chris shared the news with the world. Her only wish was to be able to leave this world with her dignity intact, and Chris provided that kindness for her.
One thing is for sure, Norma and Chris are perfect examples of how we should behave with each other, whether we’re a neighbor or family members, or a stranger.
“It’s with a heavy heart that I share the news that earlier this morning the world lost a truly inspiring, beautiful woman. Norma is now resting peacefully in the eternal and while she may no longer physically be with us, her spirit will continue to fill the hearts of so many people.
Perhaps Norma’s lasting legacy is that her story helped the world to see the true meaning of love. Norma reminded me that we all are created to love and all desire to be loved.”
Chris said that Norma considered him to be the grandson she never had, and she was exactly the most loving grandmother in his eyes, too.
This holiday season, keep in mind that kindness and care for each other can change some person’s life. Even if they simply live next door.
