There are no big actors, no big name directors, and it’s generally a low-budget film. But the moment Dirty Dancing hit the big screen in August 1987, its creators and cast knew they were on to something big.
The success of male lead Patrick Swayze was immediate. He became a teen idol and sex symbol, landing roles in major films such as Ghost and Donnie Darko.
However, his co-star Jennifer Gray was not in a good place when the film premiered and soon disappeared altogether. Amid the noise and festivities, Jennifer Gray disappeared as quickly as she appeared.
And the actress has long since disappeared from the public eye. But in an interview with People magazine in recent years, she opened up about the accident that changed her life.
But first, let’s take a look at Jennifer Gray’s life before the tragedy of the summer of 1987. Jennifer Gray started taking dance lessons at a young age. He was born in New York in 1960 and his father probably moved him into entertainment. His father, Joel Gray, worked as an actor, singer, dancer, director and photographer.
Jennifer studied at the Dalton School and focused on dance and acting. After graduating from school in 1978, she began to pursue her career as an actress and at the same time studied at another school – a theater school near the theater. Moreover, his life was not a bed of roses. Jennifer had to work as a waitress to pay the bills.
However, he appeared in several TV commercials, including Doctor Who. pepper. Her film debut was in Reckless in 1984. A few years later, she had her big break in Dirty Dancing, where she played the role of Frances “Baby” Houseman.
The movie is a classic, and the story is actually based on screenwriter Eleanor Bergstein’s childhood. Jennifer became an overnight star and was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Actress.
Unfortunately, it was not a great success. Prior to the film’s August 1987 release, Gray was living in Ireland with her then-boyfriend Matthew Broderick.
However, the couple were involved in a horrific car accident when Broderick was driving on the wrong side of the road and collided with another vehicle. A mother and daughter were in the second car. Both died on the spot.
Broderick was charged with dangerous driving, but this was later reduced to reckless driving. And while Jennifer Gray was psychologically scarred, she suffered nothing more than bruises and minor physical injuries.
Dirty Dancing premiered a few days later. However, although the film was a success, Gray could not enjoy it.
“It doesn’t make sense to have this deep sadness, this survivor’s guilt, and celebrate it as the next big thing. Gray told the Daily Mirror it was not fair to be encouraged by the city.
The actress never fully recovered from the injuries sustained in the accident. “My mind wasn’t the same, my ambition wasn’t the same,” he told People.

He disappeared for several years in the early 1990s, struggling with survivor’s guilt, before appearing in a 1995 episode of Friends. At that time, she underwent plastic surgery and her face completely changed.
