Damir Yusupov, the brave pilot who successfully landed a Ural Airlines plane in a Russian cornfield after hitting a bird and losing both engines, has told of an unforgettable incident. With 233 people on board, Yusupov said there was no time to panic as his main goal was to save the lives of everyone on board.
Yusupov humbly said: “I did what I had to do. I saved the plane, the passengers and the crew. I think it was the only solution. I don’t think I’m a hero.” Despite his humility, his actions during the emergency were nothing short of heroic.
This landing, which took place near Zhukovsky Airport on the outskirts of Moscow, has been compared to the famous “Miracle on the Hudson” in 2009, when Captain Chesley Sullenberger landed safely in New York’s Hudson River after colliding with a bird.
Emergency personnel reported that 74 people received medical attention after landing. However, the Ministry of Health explained that only 23 people were hospitalized due to injuries in this accident, and all but one returned home after treatment.
In recognition of their bravery and quick actions, President Vladimir Putin awarded Yusupov and co-pilot Georgy Murzin the title of Hero of Russia. The remaining crew members were also awarded the Medal of Valor for their outstanding efforts to ensure the safety of the passengers and for evacuating the aircraft within minutes.
The plane was heading from the airport to Simferopol, the capital of Crimea, annexed to Ukraine. Shortly after takeoff, the aircraft encountered a flock of seagulls and its left engine failed. Additionally, after colliding with another flock of birds, the right engine lost power, rendering the plane unable to stay airborne.
Passengers were amazed to see how intact the plane was after it slid hundreds of meters through a cornfield. Most took videos with their mobile phones and shared them on social media.
Ural Airlines highlighted Yusupov’s extensive flying experience with over 3,000 flight hours. He has been a valued member of the company since 2013 and was promoted to captain last year.
Interestingly, Yusupov’s path to becoming a pilot followed a different path. Although his father was a helicopter pilot, Yusupov initially pursued a legal career. It wasn’t until he enrolled in aviation school at the age of 32 that he followed in his father’s footsteps and began traveling by plane.
After this painful experience, Yusupov plans to rest in his cabin. “He is currently on holiday and will be resting while the accident investigation continues,” he said. This incredible landing is a testament to the skill, courage and perseverance of Damir Yusupov and his crew.
Their quick thinking and unwavering commitment to passenger safety ensured that everyone on board survived this unprecedented event.
