Amy and Joshua, a young couple in their 20s with three children (one on the way), find themselves sidelined after being given just seven days’ notice to vacate their rental home. I noticed that They are unable to pay rent because they are dependent on government assistance. With eviction looming, they are still deciding where they will live once their current home is no longer an option.
Amy and her partner desperately needed housing assistance, but no family members were willing to help. The only family member who tried to help was an uncle who lived in Somerset.
Meanwhile, the housing authority threatened to separate families and evict them if they did not accept the offer. The couple felt scared and helpless because they had no other options.
It is difficult for her to know what action to take, as Barnsley City Council needs to send a consistent message to Joshua and her family. Even though Joshua and Victoria Robertshaw lived in the same house indefinitely, Joshua’s name was not on the lease. Her only name was Victoria. She passed away at the age of 45 due to coronavirus infection in August 2020.
Joshua and his family find themselves in dire straits as the council makes different decisions. Joshua is stubborn because he doesn’t need to destroy his family for a different choice.
The judge granted a direct possession order for the home, which stipulates that the people living in certain homes must vacate the home within seven days. A spokesperson for Sanctuary Housing said that the decision took some time, but the decision was made because the rent had accumulated over a long period of time.
The tenant lived in the house for several months without paying rent. Despite all efforts to achieve this without legal action, the situation remains unresolved.
Barnsley City Council is working with stakeholders to ensure residents find new homes as quickly as possible and free space for families on Barnsley’s waiting list. Barnsley consultant Jenny Platts, who worked on the case, spoke about the issue and said the Housing Authority had advised and supported the couple on possible alternatives.
