Nature never ceases to amaze us with its amazing changes. One such phenomenon that fascinates us is the formation of shear waves or waves that create a net-like pattern on the water surface. These unusual grids form when two sets of wave systems intersect at an angle greater than 45 degrees, or when wind or swell pushes the waves in different directions.
These nets may look beautiful, but they are extremely dangerous to swimmers and boats. Beneath the surface of this breathtaking sight lie dangerous currents that can destroy ships and threaten people underwater. The checkerboard pattern makes navigation very difficult. In fact, many navigational accidents and shipwrecks are thought to be caused by ocean crossings.
According to the European Space Agency, such situations are very common at sea. They occur when onshore winds and swells or two swells coexist. A 2004 study found that a significant proportion of boat accidents occur during ocean crossings.
This phenomenon is particularly common along France’s west coast near the Île de Ré. However, entering the water while crossing the ocean is extremely dangerous. Instead, tourists have the opportunity to view this amazing sight from a lighthouse in the western part of the island.
