In a shocking development, Paula Abdul has filed a lawsuit against fellow So You Think You Can Dance judge Nigel Lythgoe, alleging sexual assault. As fans of Abdul, we are left feeling stunned and saddened by these serious claims. Lythgoe, known not only for his role as a judge on So You Think You Can Dance but also as an executive producer on American Idol, is accused by Abdul of multiple assaults during their time working together.
The lawsuit, which was obtained by TMZ, was filed in Los Angeles County on December 29. Abdul is suing Lythgoe, along with 19 Entertainment and FremantleMedia North America, citing allegations of sexual assault and battery, sexual harassment, gender violence, and negligence. These claims are serious and warrant careful consideration.
According to the documents submitted by Abdul, the first alleged assault took place during one of the early seasons of American Idol while they were on the road for regional auditions. Abdul claims that Lythgoe assaulted her in a hotel elevator, where he reportedly pushed her against a wall, fondled her, and attempted to kiss her. Abdul managed to push him away and escape to her room.
After this incident, Abdul asserts that she immediately informed a team representative but ultimately decided to keep it quiet due to fears of losing her job. Regrettably, the alleged assaults did not stop there. In 2015, after Abdul signed a contract with So You Think You Can Dance, she claims that Lythgoe once again forced himself on her, inviting her to his home under the pretense of discussing work. Instead, he allegedly pinned her down on a couch and tried to kiss her.
These allegations are deeply disturbing, particularly given the significant power imbalance between Abdul and Lythgoe. No one should have to endure such treatment in the workplace or elsewhere. Abdul’s bravery in coming forward deserves our full support and respect.
Moreover, Abdul alleges that Lythgoe taunted her about the assaults, making inappropriate comments and reminding her that the statute of limitations had expired. This behavior is completely unacceptable and demonstrates a profound disregard for the seriousness of the situation.
Thanks to California’s Sexual Abuse and Cover Up Accountability Act, Abdul has chosen to break her silence and seek justice. This act allows victims of sexual abuse additional time to come forward with their stories.
As fans of Paula Abdul, it is crucial that we listen to her experience and support her during this challenging time. No one should have to suffer from sexual assault or feel afraid to speak out against their abusers. We must stand together to demand accountability for these actions and advocate for a culture that respects and protects survivors.
