You can tell something special is about to happen when the drill team from Mercer Island High School enters the gym. Each of their performances is a delight, and this group never ceases to amaze me.
As the women assume their positions, the audience can hardly contain their excitement, and things only get better from there. From a straightforward formation to a human “domino effect,” they progress. The audience is genuinely engaged by this.
More yells from the audience are then heard as they assume positions as part of a shifting pattern. When they hit the ground, the true magic happens. Even though they can’t see one another, they are perfectly in time with the music and one another.
The moment they line up diagonally across the gym is the most memorable part of the performance. As a result of their precise alignment, they produce an eye-catching optical illusion and wave-like effect.
Then the females lay down on the ground, linking their arms, and pulling each other in a wave motion. The sweet dance performance that follows is fantastic, and it is amazing to watch. The choreographer of this routine merits praise.
