Christina Applegate Nominated for Emmy Award for ‘Dead to Me’ Amidst MS Journey: ‘It’s Been an Incredible Journey

For her part in the final season of Dead to Me, which she filmed while dealing with her multiple sclerosis diagnosis, Christina Applegate has been nominated for an Emmy.

The actress, 52, who played Jen Harding in the Netflix series received her third nomination on Wednesday for Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series in advance of the 75th annual awards ceremony in September.

While she was filming the third and final season of Dead to Me in August 2021, Applegate received a diagnosis of MS.

Multiple sclerosis is a condition that affects the brain and spinal cord’s central nervous system. It can lead to issues with muscle control and strength, vision, balance, feeling, and thinking. Tremor, numbness, and lack of coordination are some symptoms.

Each case of MS is unique, with some people only experiencing minor issues and others developing severe disabilities.

Dead to Me halted production after Applegate received her diagnosis so she could start treatment. After the show ended, the actress discussed her career’s future with Variety in November 2022. She said that finishing the show while still experiencing her symptoms was “as hard as you would possibly think it would be.”. “.

Regarding her acting career, she said, “It’s about discovering what I’m capable of doing.”. “I’m still so new to this. It takes time to sort out this disease and identify the triggers for the symptoms. I’m a complete novice in this. I’m therefore attempting to make sense of it while also grieving for the person I once was. I need to find a place that is as loving as my set was, where they won’t treat me like a diva when I say, “Hey, I can only work five hours.”. ‘”.

She continued by saying that she is looking for “a place that will allow me to [work] five hours if I’m not the star” and that appearing in something as the star might not be an option in the future. “There’s no way I could finish the work I just finished again. Really, it was so difficult,” she said.

After receiving a diagnosis of MS, Christina Applegate claims she won’t likely work in front of the camera again.

The Married with Children actress said in a May interview with Vanity Fair that she has no plans to return to acting, implying that a chapter in her decades-long career has likely come to an end.

While praising the experience of working with Linda Cardellini on Dead to Me, Applegate stated that she “probably” wouldn’t work in front of the camera again.

She continued, “I can’t even imagine going to set now.”.

I’m not sure if things will get worse. Due to the necessity of providing for my family and maintaining my mental health, I am able to do voiceover work. ”.

Applegate has received seven Emmy nominations over the course of her career, including one for Friends, where she won the 2003 Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series. She also received nominations for Samantha Who?, Dead to Me, and Samantha, Please.
