Becoming parents is an indescribable joy that fills our hearts with hope and enthusiasm. This is an important milestone that will inspire dreams of teaching, guiding and caring for young children. Unfortunately, not all paths to parenthood follow the path we imagine.
Carlos Morales, a brave man from Phoenix, Arizona, experienced this bittersweet truth. Carlos and Erica Morales were a love story waiting to happen. The two first met in 2006 at a nightclub in Scottsdale, Arizona. Although there was a language barrier between them (Carlos only spoke Spanish and Erica only English), they felt an undeniable connection.
Their first meeting ends in vain as Erica loses the paper with Carlos’ number on it. But fate intervened and they were brought together through mutual friends.
Over time, their relationship develops and Carlos decides to learn English so he can communicate more effectively with Erica. Meanwhile, Erica learned Spanish to strengthen their bond and mutual understanding.
The two had a beautiful wedding in Las Vegas in 2007 and began their journey to start a family. Unfortunately, the first attempt tragically ended in miscarriage. However, thanks to her fertility treatments, Erica became pregnant again. Little did they know that they would experience something amazing in their lives.
During Erica’s first ultrasound, the couple learned that she would not have just one child, but four of her own. Carlos and Erica prepared for the arrival of the quad. As Erika’s pregnancy progressed, the strain on her body became apparent, and Carlos began taking over her care, taking on household chores and providing emotional support.
On January 12, 2015, Erica was admitted to the hospital due to high blood pressure. Before Carlos contacted her, she texted him to let him know that doctors were hoping to give birth soon. When Carlos arrived, he kissed his wife on the head and whispered, “Let’s get these kids outside.” Little did he know that his life was about to change forever.
Unfortunately, Erica went into hypovolemic shock after giving birth, causing severe blood and fluid loss. Her girlfriend, Carlos, was sitting helplessly by her bed when her alarm went off and her medical staff rushed to help her. An hour later, Carlos received the terrible news of Erika’s death, leaving him a single father of four.
The immense sadness and pain that Carlos felt was immeasurable. He went from the joy of becoming a father to the most horrifying sense of loss imaginable. Carlos kept his late wife’s memory alive by naming his children Carlos Jr., Paisley, Tracy, and Erica, as previously discussed.
Despite the insurmountable hardship and heartbreak, Carlos knew he had to be strong for his children. He took parenting classes to learn how to bathe, feed, and care for babies. I also learned CPR to keep them safe. Erica’s mother, Sondra Bridges, moved in with Carlos and helped raise the quadruplets. The story of Carlos Morales is both heartbreaking and inspiring.
His journey as a single father of quadruplets is a testament to the strength and resilience of the human spirit. With the support of relatives and the kindness of strangers, Carlos continues to embrace his new role with love and determination.
We can only imagine the emotional roller coaster Carlos went through during the birth of his children and the subsequent sense of loss.
