A patient and Isabelle Jennings, a young caregiver at the Life Care Center in Kansas City, became close through music, especially hymns. Isabelle frequently assisted Mary Helen Schmelze and visited her room every Friday to sing a song.
A few months after they first met, Mary’s health started to decline. Congestive heart failure was on the verge of taking her life.
On her day off, Isabelle visited the care facility and performed a final song for Mary. She had selected the song “In the Garden.”. The nurse’s assistant sang beautifully for her friend, and Mary’s daughter Julie captured it on tape.
Isabelle claimed to genuinely care about everyone and be willing to help out whenever needed. She comforted Mary’s grandson and her family when they found out about her condition. When Mary saw Isabelle, she always encouraged her to sing for her.
Julie, Mary Helen’s daughter, uploaded the video to YouTube a few days after her mother passed away to inspire other caregivers. In the movie, Mary Helen talks about her experience as a caregiver and offers advice to those who may be in a similar situation.
Julie believes that giving someone your time is the greatest gift you can give them. It will be much more valuable to your family and friends than any material possession.
In addition to giving direct patient care, caregivers play a critical role in educating patients and their families about their health issues.
Only caregivers can truly complete the healthcare system.
They provide the necessary care to patients in a variety of settings, such as private homes and hospitals.
Although important, the caregiver’s role is frequently undervalued. Caregivers offer emotional support in addition to physical care. They frequently stay with patients during trying times, such as when they first learn they have a serious illness or when they are undergoing difficult therapy.
The emotional and physical needs of caregivers must be met. Caregiver responsibilities often include juggling scheduling appointments, managing medications, and giving personal care. The sheer volume of this could leave caregivers feeling powerless.
If you are a caregiver, be aware that you are not alone. Many people who understand what you’re going through can support you during this difficult time.
The daily generosity of countless skilled healthcare professionals goes largely unnoticed.
We are grateful for your generosity and the love you have for your patients.
Best wishes from the Seneca, Kansas, team at Life Care. We are grateful to Isabelle for providing so many people with a calming presence. Grandma Helen, good luck.
