Jamie Lee Curtis is on cloud nine following her recent Oscar win. Appearing on the Today show in March, the Everything Everywhere All at Once star reflected on the profound impact of receiving her first Academy Award and how she plans to affectionately refer to her new trophy.
“The longing for attention and appreciation for your work is universal,” Curtis remarked. “Whatever job you do, you hope someone appreciates you. And this is a really lovely, shiny gesture of appreciation.”
At 64 years old, Curtis clinched her Oscar for her role in Everything Everywhere All at Once. In a heartfelt acceptance speech, she expressed gratitude to her family and supporters who have championed her throughout her career, spanning back to 1977.
During her virtual appearance on the Today show on March 14, Curtis shared her disbelief about the whole experience. “I never thought in a million years that I would have this couple of days, and I’m very moved by the whole thing.”
In a touching tribute to her transgender child, Curtis revealed her decision not to name her statue. In honor of her 26-year-old daughter Ruby, whom she disclosed as transgender in 2021, Curtis affectionately refers to her Oscar statuette as “they/them”.
“In support of my daughter Ruby, I’m having them be a they/them,” Curtis explained. “I’m just going to call them ‘them’, they/them, and they are doing great.”
Reflecting on her journey as a parent to a transgender child, Curtis acknowledges the learning curve involved and the importance of embracing new perspectives.
“It’s speaking a new language,” she acknowledged. “It’s learning new terminology and words. I am new at it. I am not someone who is pretending to know much about it. And I’m going to blow it. I’m going to make mistakes. We’re human. But if one person reads this, sees a picture of Ruby and me, and says, ‘I feel free to say this is who I am,’ then it’s worth it.”
Despite being part of a Hollywood dynasty, Ruby has largely stayed out of the public eye and currently works as a video editor for a gaming personality on YouTube. Curtis beams with pride over her child’s achievements and personal growth.
“I knew Ruby had had a boyfriend. I knew that Ruby had used the word bi. But gender identity and sexual orientation—those are two separate things,” Curtis explained.
Jamie Lee Curtis’s recent Oscars triumph underscores her talent, perseverance, and dedication to her craft. Achieving this milestone in her career, she leaves a poignant message reminding us of the importance of mutual support and compassion.
“We’re so glad you finally won. It was a long time coming and so, so well-deserved.”
