A 105-year-old great-grandmother broke the world record for the 100-meter dash at the U.S. Senior Games.
Julia Hawkins, also known as her “Hurricane,” is an amazing woman who doesn’t let her age define her abilities. When she was 105 years old, she broke her record at the Louisiana Senior Games and she set the world record for fastest 100 meters. And guess what? Now 107 years old, she shows no signs of slowing down.

Despite what she may seem, running wasn’t always a part of Julia’s life. In fact, one of his children suggested that when he turns 100, he should try running the 100 meters with the goal of completing it in under 100 seconds. However, Julia surpassed this goal with flying colors.

Fast forward to the 2021 Louisiana Senior Her Game. Julia had set her goal that she would finish the sprint in less than one minute. My finishing time was just over 62 seconds, but considering the weather conditions that day, I still did a great job. It was very windy and very cold. Julia humbly admits: »

But what made his race even more moving was the presence of his former students, now in their 90s, cheering him on from the sidelines. This is a testament to her influence as a retired teacher. Julia jokingly says, “Now you know how old I am.”

Although Julia did not achieve her goal of running under 1 minute, she proudly won the title of fastest 100m runner in the over 105 category. Her family was not surprised that she achieved her victory. They were thrilled that she won the gold medal and broke the world record for that amazing feat.

Julia’s life is about more than just running. She enjoys gardening and spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Family has always been important to her. She fondly remembers her beloved husband Murray Hawkins, to whom she was married for 70 years until his death.

Their love story began under unusual circumstances, as they were connected by phone. Murray was at Pearl Harbor when it was bombed, and the couple married in this unusual way. Julia remembers her journey to legalize her marriage. She said: “My father-in-law came to Baton Rouge with me to see if it was legal in Louisiana. And it was. So we got married over the phone. »

As Julia ages beautifully, she continues to pass on her wisdom to others. She encourages everyone to look for the “magical moments” in life, those rare opportunities that take your breath away. It can be something as simple as a stunning sunrise, a mesmerizing sunset, or even a shooting star.
