Lisa Kudrow supports research into mental health.
The 59-year-old actress discussed the value of raising money for mental health on May 4 in Los Angeles at the UCLA WOW 2023 Mental Health Summit.
The actress exclusively told PEOPLE, “The important thing is that we keep funding research so that they can keep exploring ways to address mental health issues that talk therapy might not be able to handle, that meditation might not be able to address.
Although Kudrow acknowledges that laughter can be the best medicine during difficult times and that it can be “extremely helpful” during “mild struggles,” she also acknowledges that the response and laughter she received from her work on comedies like Friends wasn’t at all about her.
According to her, “I do take the time to be aware of it and know that it’s not really me.”. “In any case, I’ve always felt that when an artist—be they an actor, a musician, or another kind—does something, something comes through them. And that’s what I believe an audience is picking up on and liking so much. I’m getting a little too, I don’t know, spiritual or something for this, but I think it’s coming through someone. “.
She also recalls how, even for a short while, being able to escape from the reality of life after 9/11 while watching another sitcom, Will and Grace.
She explains, “After 9/11, all I did was watch the news, and everything I saw was someone who knew someone who was in one of the towers or something similar.
I said, “Oh, okay.
I started watching Will & Grace. Oh, they must be in New York, I wonder. Lordy, they’re in New York. In the buildings, if they knew anyone, I wonder who they knew. ‘”.
“Then I said, ‘Oh, no, wait, no, because they would have shot this before 9/11. You know you work for that TV. Avoid making a fool of yourself. Then I reacted with “No, no.”.
Fiction exists here.
It was unheard of in this world. ‘”.
Then I simply needed a break, and I was incredibly grateful that there was something to watch where 9/11 had not occurred. I desperately needed the break. “.
