Paul Newman, a true Hollywood legend, enjoyed a life marked by remarkable achievements, both in his illustrious acting career and his philanthropic efforts. He became an icon, known for his talent and generosity. Yet, beneath this facade of success, Newman carried two profound regrets that were deeply personal.
The first regret arose from a strained relationship with his father. Newman felt that his father viewed him as a failure until he achieved stardom in Hollywood. Newman lamented not having a closer relationship with Scott, confessing, “I knew he drank too much and [medicated] himself, but I didn’t know how to open a door into him. I don’t think I ever hugged Scott or patted him on the arm or back or rump — the things fathers do.”
In the aftermath of Scott’s death, Newman took steps to honor his son’s memory by founding the Scott Newman Foundation in 1980. This organization aims to raise awareness about substance abuse and to prevent others from experiencing similar tragedies.
Despite his immense success and the significant contributions he made throughout his life, these two regrets added a poignant layer to Newman’s story.
